About

Chen Chien-Chih

In the process of capturing these experiences, the author realized the joy of life. At the same time, he also thought about how to use it for other purposes through design. It evolved with time, place, and life, and became a familiar yet refreshing work.

Handicrafts begin with life and end with life. In this exhibition, the artist has selected a series of glass living vessels, hoping to follow the wisdom accumulated through history as we progress through time, and explore the current position of handmade glass in today's world.
The history of the glass industry traces back to over a decade ago when many glass factories relocated, leaving behind accumulated stock and raw materials. The "white" used in the exhibited vessels is made by re-melting materials originally intended for producing milky-white decorative lamps from earlier periods.
The theme, "The Trace of White," aims to describe a uniquely Taiwanese white—one that is not a saturated, brilliant white, but rather one speckled with tiny black dots and varying shades of white. It carries a rustic quality, evoking the national character of Taiwan. This background resonates with the exhibition space, which also inherits traces of past generations' lives.
In contrast to the standardized modern industrial materials, using materials with history often comes with many challenges—such as connecting traditional methods with the functional needs of modern life, recreating ancient techniques or choosing between old and new technologies, and the high costs of restoration. These challenges test the creator’s sense of life's mission. Yet, it is hoped that all troubles may fade into intangible traces, and through human hands, be transformed into individual works that express the most gentle, intimate side of art.
